About the UAE
The United Arab Emirates is a federation of seven emirates – Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, and Umm al-Quwain. The largest emirate is Abu Dhabi which is also the capital city.
The UAE has one of the most diverse populations in the Middle East. The local population, known as Emiratis, account for approximately 20% of the entire population. Expatriates from other Arab countries, Europe and Asia make up the balance.
Tourism is a booming industry within the country as the UAE offers an irresistible mix of sun, sand, sea and mountains, luxurious hotels and shopping malls and top rate restaurants. The UAE retains its Arabian roots yet maintains a comfortable blend between tradition and modernity.
While the official language is Arabic, English is widely spoken and understood. Weekend is Friday and Saturday for the government sector. Most private companies maintain a six-day week (with Friday as an off day).
The national religion is Islam, but practice of all religious beliefs is allowed.
The currency is the Dirham (Dh or AED) which is divided into 100 Fils.
The UAE Standard Time is 4 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)
